The Dutch people of the 17th-century had a give-and-take relationship with the ocean. They reclaimed land from the sea with polders, which the seas would occasionally take back. Jan Luyken’s The Fisherman harvests from the sea’s bounty, unconcerned about the real risk that the sea might one day decide to harvest him. Fishing has always been a dangerous job, but an important one.
The Fisherman is a single part of Jan Luyken’s sprawling masterwork, The Mirror of Human Activities (Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf). Here, the engraving has been reproduced in all its splendor as a limited edition print for you to display proudly in your home or office. In painstakingly recreating this vision from the Golden Age of Dutch fine art, we used only the finest materials and historically accurate techniques.
Our fine art etchings use exclusive handmade paper crafted using techniques dating back to the 14th Century, passed down through generations by Indian artisans. Dried in the sun, this paper is a timeless, creative alternative to ordinary paper.
