In Jan Luyken’s The Professor, we see an academic mind who strives not to pass on a replica of his knowledge but a spirit of exploration. A good professor seems like they know everything. But a better professor will cheerfully admit what they don’t know. That’s the crux of learning: the more you come to understand, the more you realize how little you truly do.

The Professor is a single part of Jan Luyken’s sprawling masterwork, The Mirror of Human Activities (Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf). Here, the engraving has been reproduced in all its splendor as a limited edition print for you to display proudly in your home or office. In painstakingly recreating this vision from the Golden Age of Dutch fine art, we used only the finest materials and historically accurate techniques.
