In the 17th Century when Jan Luyken was active, the age of discovery was in full swing. Ships left harbor every day, rigged with bright and fresh topsails, bound for destinations unknown. To survive months and years at sea through the harshest conditions, their sails had to be well-made. The Sail Maker understands the importance of his work and attends to it with a singular focus.
The Sail Maker is a single part of Jan Luyken’s sprawling masterwork, The Mirror of Human Activities (Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf). Here, the engraving has been reproduced in all its splendor as a limited edition print for you to display proudly in your home or office. In painstakingly recreating this vision from the Golden Age of Dutch fine art, we used only the finest materials and historically accurate techniques.
Our fine art etchings use exclusive handmade paper crafted using techniques dating back to the 14th Century, passed down through generations by Indian artisans. Dried in the sun, this paper is a timeless, creative alternative to ordinary paper.
