Working with marble, there’s a permanence to every move. When the chisel chips a piece away, it cannot be added back. It’s gone, and the piece forever takes on a new shape. Jan Luyken’s The Sculpture depicts an artist in studio carefully preparing to strike. Onlookers watch in amazement. Not all art is made to be eternal, but this is.

The Sculpture is a single part of Jan Luyken’s sprawling masterwork, The Mirror of Human Activities (Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf). Here, the engraving has been reproduced in all its splendor as a limited edition print for you to display proudly in your home or office. In painstakingly recreating this vision from the Golden Age of Dutch fine art, we used only the finest materials and historically accurate techniques.

“A hammer and a chisel, real fine
