This action-packed image shows a young man weighing his duty to protect his homeland against the terrifying threat of imminent danger. Who can say what happened next – did he heroically charge into battle, or turn and run in the opposite direction? While the answer has been lost to time, this pivotal moment of his life will endure forever in The Soldier.

The Soldier is a single part of Jan Luyken’s sprawling masterwork, The Mirror of Human Activities (Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf). Here, the engraving has been reproduced in all its splendor as a limited edition print for you to display proudly in your home or office. In painstakingly recreating this vision from the Golden Age of Dutch fine art, we used only the finest materials and historically accurate techniques.
